Montgomery Ward was founded by Aaron Montgomery Ward in the late 19th century.  His first few years were disastrous with a few unsuccessful starts including his entire operation and inventory destroyed in early October 1871 during the Great Chicago Fire.  No one will argue that he wasn't a fighter and he successfully founded his business in 1872.  He was a visionary seeing the potential to capture the rural market with his mail order catalog.  He was remembered as not only a great businessman but a pioneer in the preservation of parkland bordering Lake Michigan.  While his business didn't actually manufacture wooden skis he capitalized on his thriving brand by placing his logo and innovative slogan "satisfaction guaranteed or your money back".  It is believed that Montgomery Ward first started selling skis manufactured by Theodore A. Johnsen Co. (Tayco) in the winter of 1906-1907.
